Waste is a complicated problem that must be faced by governments in various regions. While land for waste is very limited, the population continues to grow and there is always waste generated from daily consumption. Improper handling of waste also will have a negative impact on the environment and public health.

Efforts continue to be made by the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta through the Sanitation Department to deal with this waste problem, one of which is by developing alternative solutions in the form of an Intermediate Treatment Facility (ITF) that can process around 2,200 tons of waste. With this technology, Waste will be processed with technology that meets technical, financial and social requirements so that it can be an appropriate and environmentally friendly technology. This has been regulated in DKI Jakarta Provincial Governor Regulation No. 50 of 2016 concerning the Development and Operation of Municipal Waste Management Facilities or Intermediate Treatment Facilities (ITF).

PT Jakarta Propertindo (JakPro) together with the Technology Assessment and Application Agency (BPPT) will conduct ITF project development in 4 locations in DKI Jakarta, which are Sunter, Marunda, Cakung, and Duri Kosambi. This has been included in the 2012-2032 DKI Jakarta provincial waste management master plan.

ITF technology in the form of incinerator, gasification, pyrolysis, and Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) can reduce waste as much as 80-90% of the total capacity of waste at each ITF facility. This certainly can reduce the amount of waste significantly. In addition, this technology can convert waste into electrical energy. This makes ITF is claimed to be able to eliminate the pile of garbage quickly through the thermal process and does not require too much land.

The use of ITF technology is intended to enable waste management to support sustainable development, that is, development that can meet the needs of today's life without reducing the right to meet the needs of future generations (continuing without lessening).

ITF Technology Work Process

Waste is collected in the ITF facility, then put into an incineration chamber with very high temperatures (2200 Fahrenheit or around 1200 degrees Celsius) while the waste will be stirred by the machine so that the heat is given evenly and thoroughly.

From around 2200 tons of waste burned will produce around 200 tons of fly ash and bottom ash which will be disposed of to special residual landfills. This proves that this technology can reduce waste significantly. Emissions generated are only about 5% of total waste. Plus, this technology also has Air pollution control that can regulate the gases of the combustion process safely and does not pollute the environment when released into the air.

As a Waste Power Plant, of course this technology can produce electricity from waste. Electricity generated from the process of burning waste every day is about 35 megawatts.

With ITF technology, it is hoped that the city of Jakarta can become a cleaner, more comfortable and environmentally friendly city.
